New Year's Resolutions

New Year's Day, 2006. You have feasted - yet again - on left over turkey, and dressing. You've had your portion of black eyed peas for good luck. At the stroke of midnight, you made your list of New Year's Resolutions just as you have every year for the past how many years?

You start off strong. You resolve that you'll actually do them, all of them, this time. But by January 10th, you are back to the old habits, old thoughts, old ways of doing things. In short, you couldn't keep those lofty resolutions. Glumly, you sit with your chin in your hands and think, "Well, maybe next year."

Why wait until next year? Why not start all over now? What law states that changes have to begin on January 1st? Chose a resolution - just one -you want to keep. There's no need to overwhelm yourself. One will do nicely. Changes are best made gradually.

So - Which one will it be? To shed the extra pounds you've picked up over the past few years? To stop smoking? Perhaps your resolution to be more assertive and less like a door mat. Which one resolution you made on New Year's Eve is the very most important to you? Which one do you want to accomplish more than anything? That is the first key. You must want that change with all your heart. Not because someone else wants you to do this. Not because you need to do this. But because you want to do this. That is the important first step. You can't change for anyone but yourself.

Now that you have that figured out, what do you need to do to make it happen? Ah! This is where I come in. We do things for a reason (frequently unknown or unrecognized). Because that is the way we were taught. Because we delude ourselves into believing that it works. Because we feel we don't deserve anything different or better. And that is where you are wrong! You deserve the very best that life can offer you. You deserve health. You deserve a good self image and a body shape to match. You deserve all good things.

This is where our programming begins to fail us. Last month I talked about the faulty programming we get as children. But that isn't the only time we are programmed. As adults, even good programming can go haywire when we hear the negative repeated over and over and over. It is very difficult to change using only the cognitive mind because the subconscious just keep spinning those negative tapes. And as long as those tapes are playing, change is next to impossible.

Creating change by changing the old tapes in the subconscious is easier, more efficient and more lasting than using only the conscious mind. Why? Because the subconscious is where they are all stored. These old tapes are such an ingrained part of our psyches, we don't even realize they're there, that they are playing or that they are sabotaging our every effort to change.

It's time to take that proverbal bull by the horns and do something about it. It's time to look at all those old tapes, decide which ones you don't need - or want - and change them to positive, supportive tapes that make you feel good, encourages your and helps you achieve your goals.

This year, as you make New Year's Resolutions, add a new one. Empower yourself, resolve to give yourself the ability to achieve them.
